PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate ReleaseUPDATE ON COVID-19 SITUATION
Shah Alam, Wednesday, 25 November 2020 At an online Press Conference today, Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai; Managing Director Dato’ Lee Kim Meow; and Executive Director Mr Lim Cheong Guan briefed the attending media personnel on what the Company has been doing to mitigate the COVID-19 outbreak among its workers in Meru, Klang.
As of today (25 November 2020), Top Glove has temporarily stopped work in 20 of its manufacturing facilities in Meru, Klang.
The high number of cases in the Teratai Cluster is attributed to mass testing conducted over the past 3 days. However, today, there were 17 positive cases as reported by the Ministry of Health, indicating a downward trend as the mass screening exercise concludes.
Top Glove has been working closely with the Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities to screen its workers in Meru, Klang. The screening of some 5,700 workers affected by the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in Meru, Klang, has been completed and mass screening of the remaining Top Glove employees in the area is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
To questions regarding the state of workers’ accommodation, Top Glove assures that as the world’s largest glove manufacturer, it understands that its workforce is the Company’s most important asset, and employee safety and well-being has always been a priority. Since the start of the EMCO, Top Glove employees have been delivering free food and other essentials to their affected colleagues three (3) times daily.
The Company has also been making improvements to the living conditions of foreign workers, in compliance to Act 446 (Akta 446) since July 2020. The Company has spent some RM20 million on purchasing 100 units of new accommodation for workers over the past two months, to ensure that they adhere to the Government’s requirements. This is in addition to having previously invested in 100 double storey houses and hostels with full facilities including in- 2 house canteen, automated teller machines, barbershops, and minimarts, worth an estimated RM50 million in total. Efforts to source for more accommodation and to improve existing worker accommodations are ongoing.
To a question regarding a possible contamination of gloves, Top Glove assures that this is not possible because of the glove-making and delivery process that the gloves undergo before reaching customers. The production process is also highly automated with minimal human intervention required. Further, employees tasked with packing the gloves are in full personal protective equipment (PPE) (including PPE suits, gloves, face shields and masks), so there is no direct contact with the gloves.
Top Glove reaffirmed its commitment to doing its part to preventing the spread of the coronavirus. This includes the further screening of its workforce in Meru, Klang, continuous disinfection and sanitisation of factories and accommodation, and the implementation of ongoing COVID-19 preventive measures, which were in place since the start of the pandemic.
Top Glove reiterates that it is working closely with the authorities through this period towards ensuring the continued safety and well-being of its employees and local community, which remains its utmost priority.
