TOP GLOVE EARNS TRIPLE HONOURS AT PRIME MINISTER’S HIBISCUS AWARD 2021/2022

The Group wins Gold award for Special Project and two awards for Notable Achievement in Environmental Performance

Shah Alam, Tuesday, 27 June 2023 Top Glove’s environmental efforts were recognised at the prestigious Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award 2021/2022 (PMHA) recently on 22 June 2023, where it took home top honours in the Special Project Category and earned two awards for Notable Achievement in Environmental Performance.

At PMHA 2021/2022, two of Top Glove’s factories, namely Factory 30 and Factory 9, earned the Notable Achievement in Environmental Performance award based on an assessment to evaluate a company’s overall commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its own operations or activities. This approach is consistent with the principles of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)’s Business Charter for Sustainable Development and in line with the ISO 14001 Standard. These two factories are among 18 factories that are certified with ISO 14001:2015 certification, with an additional five expecting to complete the application for the certification this year.

Additionally, Factory 30 won Gold in the Special Project Category for an initiative aimed at “turning waste into gold”, by turning nitrile residual waste into value-added rubber products such as reclaimed nitrile rubber safety shoe outsoles, gaskets, and sealants, and has also developed a patented green reclaiming process. This initiative, which underscores Top Glove’s commitment to nitrile residual waste reclamation, has resulted in an annual reduction of carbon emissions by approximately 80 metric tonnes and the mitigation of land space by 54 cubic metres.

Top Glove’s Managing Director, Mr. Lim Cheong Guan, said: “These accolades at the prestigious Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award serve as a recognition of Top Glove’s commitment towards protecting the environment. It is also a testament to the collective efforts of our employees who have contributed to our sustainable practices.”

Top Glove’s Executive Director, Mr Ng Yong Lin, remarked: “We are inspired to continue our journey towards a greener future, upholding ethical business principles that benefit our employees, the environment and the wider community. We remain committed to continue making a positive impact as we strive for excellence in sustainability.”

This marks the second time the company’s environmental stewardship has been recognised at PMHA; it had previously earned the Notable Achievement in Environmental Performance award at the PMHA 2019/2020 edition.

Understanding how climate change can greatly impact businesses, communities and the environment, Top Glove has undertaken several initiatives to protect the environment in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13: Climate Action).

These initiatives are outlined in the Company’s Sustainability Policy which was launched in June 2022, which includes setting a Net Zero Carbon target by FY2025, among others. The Group also aims to reduce its carbon emission intensity by 10% by FY2025 with FY2022 as a baseline. Additionally, the Group adheres to the Environmental Policy and Environmental Management System and has in place efficient water management and energy management; effluent and waste management; product innovation; circular economic and upcycling; and data monitoring.

Top Glove has partnered with Shizen Malaysia Sdn Bhd since November 2021 to execute a rooftop based solar PV plant at 7 of its factories, including Factory 19B, Factory 20B, Factory 21, Factory 22, Factory 24, Factory 10, and Factory 12, to further reduce its carbon footprint. To date, a total of 15 Top Glove’s factories are equipped with rooftop solar panels, with a total solar capacity of 7.74 MWp.

The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award, first launched in 1996, is the premier private sector environmental award for business and industry in Malaysia. It is jointly organised by three of Malaysia’s leading private sector non-profit organisations concerned with corporate environmental management and performance: the Environmental Management & Research Association of Malaysia (ENSEARCH), the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), and the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MICCI), and is endorsed by the Ministry Of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change (NRECC) and supported by the Department of Environment (DOE) and the private sector.
