TOP GLOVE RANKS 2ND HIGHEST IN PATENT APPLICATIONS IN MALAYSIA FOR 2020

The Company is the only glovemaker to be included in the top 20 list of patent applicants

Shah Alam, Monday, 15 February 2021 Top Glove is pleased to announce that Top Glove International Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary and Research & Development arm of Top Glove Corporation Bhd, is ranked second (2nd) highest among Malaysian patent applicants for the year 2020. Top Glove sits on the prestigious list alongside several established universities, institutions, and corporations.

This recognition from the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, is a testament to Top Glove’s commitment towards continuous innovation and breakthrough, which has successfully made it the world’s largest manufacturer of gloves.

“The significance of intellectual property (IP) has always been appreciated by Top Glove, especially the role it plays in an increasingly knowledge-driven economy; contributing towards Malaysia’s continuous development. At Top Glove, creating value through sustainable practices ranks high on our corporate agenda. We have always believed in doing well by doing good and remaining committed to managing our business in a way that respects and contributes positively to the environment, resources, and greater community. In view of this, it is crucial to encourage innovation as well as the protection and commercialisation of this innovation,” says the Company.

The Company currently has nine (9) Research & Development (R&D) Centres throughout Malaysia and Thailand, each focusing and specialising on different areas of research development. These Centres collectively employ about 1,000 researchers, mainly engineers, chemists and scientists, comprising over 40 PhD graduates; over 100 Master’s degree holders; and over 700 Bachelor degree holders. These Centres continue to spearhead ongoing multidisciplinary research to consolidate and adapt to the rapidly shifting global market trends while creating new developments for its high quality and lifesaving gloves, and other personal protective equipment (PPE). These include product and material development; developing sustainable technologies; advancing engineering and automation; the innovation and development of formers, an essential part of the manufacturing process; the filing of IPs; and talent development and collaboration.

Last year, 2020, Top Glove’s R&D Centres had filed 52 patent applications in Malaysia and 97 patent applications overseas, related to gloves, formers, dental dams, chemicals used in the glove industry and automation systems, which enhance product quality and improve the production efficiency.

While patent filings had traditionally been dominated by universities, Top Glove’s top 2 ranking reflects the trend of increasing industry based R&D and demonstrates the Company’s commitment towards inventions, innovation and continuous enhancement. Top Glove will continue to intensify its investment in R&D, artificial intelligence and digitalisation, in view of which the company will continue to recruit more talents for its growing R&D team to advance its journey towards Industry 4.0.

Top Glove owns more than 300 intellectual properties (IPs) both locally and globally, including wellknown brands such as Top Care, GripPlus, FINESSIS, FLEXYLON, Top Feel, Biogreen, and Hydraplus among others.
