TOP Glove International Sdn Bhd is ranked the second highest among Malaysian patent application for last year, behind MIMOS Bhd.
The recognition came from the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), an agency under the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.
“This is a testament to Top Glove’s commitment towards continued innovation and breakthrough, which has successfully made it the world’s largest manufacturer of gloves,” it said, in a statement.
Top Glove International is a wholly owned subsidiary and the research & development (R&D) arm of Top Glove Corporation Bhd.
Elaborating, Top Glove said that last year alone, its R&D arm had filed 52 patent applications in Malaysia and 97 patent applications overseas.
Most of the patents are related to gloves, formers, dental dams, chemicals used in the glove industry and automation systems, which enhance product quality and improve production efficiency.
“The significance of intellectual property (IP) has always been appreciated by Top Glove, especially the role it plays in an increasingly knowledge-driven economy; contributing towards Malaysia’s continuous development.
“We believe in creating value through sustainable practices, which ranks high on our corporate agenda. In view of this, it is crucial to encourage innovation as well as the protection and commercialisation of our innovation,” Top Glove stated.
The glove maker currently has nine R&D centres throughout Malaysia and Thailand, each focusing and specialising on different areas of development.
Apart from Top Glove and MIMOS, other high-ranking patent applicants include Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and Petronas. – Feb 15, 2021.
